Jeff’s Jabb #5 – Focus On Danger, Get More Danger

July 8, 2015 by Jeff Lowen

As an active member of the real estate community, I engage in many conversations, tabletop discussions, and other high level, cutting edge committees and groups, all in the charge of a quest to what many feel important. And, if there’s one thing I’ve learned, not only in my real estate career, but in my home building, construction, property management, real estate investment, information technology, U.S. Naval careers and of course, just living life; is this simple fact:

What you focus on, expands.

So, when I see a particular group of individuals, sponsored by the National Association of Realtors, promoting a report that outlines all the possibilities and speculation of some unfavorable outcomes in the coming weeks, months and years of the real estate industry, first of all, I cringe and just shake my head. This report that I am referring to is even called the “definitive analysis of negative game changers emerging in real estate” A.K.A. the, “D.A.N.G.E.R. report.”

I’m not going to link it here, so if you want to seek it out, be my guest. I for one, will not promote anything that is primarily focused on the “Negative” aspects of my industry.

What you focus on, expands.

I understand the importance of pre-emptive planning and one’s innate ability to circumvent potential hazards in any business, industry or household; but spending so much time being focused on the negative aspects instead of the potential opportunities that the changing markets and regulations provide us, is in my opinion, corporate suicide.

Perhaps in writing this, I feel a sense myself, that I’m promoting that which I say I’m not. However, many in the real estate industry, and in the world for that matter, overlook this simple fact.

What you focus on, expands.

Yes, this is my rant, and just as if you focus on the “D” your child got on his otherwise straight “A” report card, there’s more likely of a chance she’ll have more of them on the next one; focusing on the ‘negative’ of anything will only help expand more of it. Yes, there are always pitfalls, yet if you agree in the slightest, you know if you keep your focus on the opportunities, the positive, good aspects of your endeavors; you will uncover and realize them more often. Do you know anyone who has changed the world for the better or helped more people by being a “doubting Thomas?” Me neither!

Mother Teresa was once quoted after turning down the opportunity to participate in many ‘Anti-war’ protests, by simply stating, “I will not participate in anything that you are against. Now, bring me something that you are “For” such as a, “We’re FOR peace rally… Well, then – I’m all in”

She got it.
